While brainstorming of my brand-to-be, I knew that I wanted a name with depth and meaning behind it. After writing up a list of obscure words with conceptual meanings, I decided on the traditional Japanese term, “Wabi Sabi”—

The view or thought of finding beauty in every aspect of imperfection in nature.

With hopes of embodying Wabi-Sabi in my design, I chose an alien revealing itself behind the mask of a girl to be the face of the brand. I believed that the girl’s face revealing her true identity represented embracing ones’ existence in its entirety— all of its imperfections and flaws.

*After in-progress critiques, a classmate of mine mentioned that my package design and style of brand were too polished to be considered Wabi-Sabi and didn't align with the traditional belief. Although I loved the idea and word, I did not want to misrepresent what it stood for and decided to switch gears.

Using a Pantone Book, I matched the colors of my initial logo design on a screen to CYMK and Pantone Coated variations. I went with coated paper so the logo’s intricate details and variety of colors have a smooth, polished finish when printed.

With no prior experience of DTG printers, I envisioned creating a t-shirt with big graphics wrapping around the torso and shoulders. Yet, with the limitations of a DTG printer, the maximum size a graphic could be printed was within a letter-sized area. With this change of plans, I printed my logo along with the graphic instead.

I wasn’t happy with how the bag appeared in the image so I decided to photoshop in an alternate image of the bag.

After a bit of work in Photoshop, I was much more satisfied with the image and appearance of the bag (now bags). Playing with the lighting, clone tool, and color-matching helped me to achieve this result.
