PUBLICATION

DESIGN

My senior year of college, I was tasked with creating a book featuring two original ads and two artists of my choosing. After deciding on David Carson and Jamie Reid— the Father of Grunge and self-described anarchist and artist behind the Sex Pistols— I gathered research and brainstormed as to how I express my findings. With full creative freedom, I felt very inspired and was excited to design a table book that truly embodied my style as an artist.

Whether it comes to art, clothes, hair, or cake, I really appreciate a good use of layers. Honing in on Reid’s collage-esque style of photocopying and deconstructed imagery, I found my love for mixed media and thermal/holographic effects to fit right in.

When determining what ties the whole magazine together, I knew that I wanted it to feel raw and edgy. Along with scribbles, I chose to incorporate high-resolution images of torn paper and various types of tape to be the consistent design elements. Layered amongst other photos and graphics, I found this combination of media to successfully present the information and represent the artists within it.

Rather than placing the text and background imagery as independent components, I enjoy utilizing space and how the elements can be complementary to one another. I believe this adds depth to the spreads in addition to guiding the reader’s eye.

Parody

Advertisements

I had a lot of fun designing the advertisements for PUNKS NOT DEAD. When brainstorming, my main goals were to create something funny, unexpected, and relatable.
